Ms Irena Chřibková, a titular organist of St. James´ Basilica in Prague is a well-known personality in the world of music. She is reckoned among excellent interpreters of Czech and French organ music of 20th century. This recording once again confirms the exceptional qualities of Ms Chřibková – a perfect encompassment of technically challenging Wiedermann´s compositions, a great feeling for music both in expression and colourfulness when registering solo compositions as well as the accompaniment pieces. Irena Chřibková presents a Czech composer Bedřich Antonín Wiedermann (1883 – 1951) who was also an organist at Emmaus in Prague. In the text of the booklet she says: „This CD is a partial redemption of debt to this exceptional personality.“ The presented compositions mostly come from private collections, transcripts and the Czech Museum of Music, only a few of them have been published. (In fact, only a minority of Wiedermann´s organ music has been published). It is really a meritorious act in performing Wiedermann music. The Toccata and Fugue in F minor, published in 1951, is generally well-known and it also deservedly concludes the CD. Other compositions, for example Capriccietto, Humoresque or Variations on composer’s theme come from the manuscripts of private collections. The attentive and devoted listeners surely welcome the presentation of the unknown compositions in the booklet. The admirable organ performance is supported by several sacred songs sung by mezzo soprano Pavla Vykopalová. Lots of humbleness and worship emanate from all songs. The lyrics are well understandable even though it is a live recording from St. James´ Basilica. When listening to the recoding, I could easily imagine sitting in the pew of the Basilica and listening to the splendid music coming from the organ-loft. Inner, almost an intimate expression emanate from the whole performance. The way towards listening to this recording might not be absolutely straightforward; however, it is not „thorny“. It requires composure and time to understand Wiedermann´s music.
